ASU's $850,000 Title IX rape settlement, one of the largest on record

In J.K. v. Arizona Board of Regents, a former student sued under Title IX in 2006 over her rape and how ASU handled former football player Darnel Henderson; former head coach Dirk Koetter was also named. The Board of Regents paid her $850,000 from the state's self-insurance fund, which her lawyers called the second-largest sexual assault settlement on record.
The settlement came on the eve of trial, after a federal judge signaled severe sanctions were likely over destroyed evidence. The Regents agreed to a system-wide review of women's safety and Title IX compliance and a student safety coordinator covering all three state universities.
ASU's side / contextThe Regents admitted no liability and said they settled to avoid the cost of trial. The state's lawyer said ASU acted appropriately; Koetter called violence against women deplorable.
